President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the Poultry, Meat and Feed Processing Factory under construction at Bechem in the Ahafo Region as part of activities on day one of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the region.

Domestic poultry production in Ghana has increased from four per cent to 22 per cent following the implementation of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme.

Briefing the President on the progress of construction, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, said the initiative had contributed to a glut in egg production, highlighting the need to expand processing and marketing opportunities for poultry farmers.

Mr. Opoku said the factory would also produce poultry feed and include a hatchery to support local production and strengthen the poultry value chain.

President Mahama recalled cutting the sod for the construction of the facility on November 27, 2025. He said the factory, which was 58 per cent complete at the time of inspection, was expected to transform Bechem into Ghana’s poultry capital when operational.

The President encouraged the youth to venture into poultry farming, citing the market opportunities available for locally produced chicken.

The Nifahene of Bechem, Awuah Boadi, commended the President for the project, expressing optimism that it would create additional employment opportunities for young people in the area. He noted that the factory had already employed some residents.

The project forms part of the government’s broader efforts under the Feed Ghana Programme to increase domestic food production, create jobs and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural and agro-processing sectors.
