Among the hundreds of colourful messages displayed on the Athlete Message Wall at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, one simple note carried a powerful invitation beyond the sporting arena. While many messages celebrated athletes, offered encouragement and wished competitors success, the Visit Cape Coast Initiative used the global platform to introduce one of Ghana’s most historic cities to the Commonwealth.

Written boldly on a blue card was the message: “If you’re looking for your next travel destination, Visit Cape Coast, Ghana!!!”

The message, though brief, represents a wider campaign to position Cape Coast as a must-visit destination for travellers seeking history, culture and authentic Ghanaian experiences. With thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and spectators from across the Commonwealth visiting Glasgow for the Games, the Athlete Message Wall became an unexpected space to promote Cape Coast and spark international interest in the city.

The initiative hopes that as participants reflect on their experiences and begin planning future travels, Cape Coast will stand out as a destination worth exploring. Located along Ghana’s coastline, Cape Coast is celebrated for its rich heritage, historic landmarks, vibrant traditions, renowned educational institutions, beautiful beaches and the warmth of its people. The city offers visitors a unique connection to Ghana’s past and present.

The Visit Cape Coast message at Glasgow 2026 highlights how cultural promotion can take many forms. Beyond major exhibitions and tourism showcases, a single thoughtful message in a global gathering can create awareness and inspire new conversations.
