The people of Cape Coast are gearing up for another vibrant celebration as the Oguaa Traditional Council and the Afahye planning committee prepares to officially launch the 2025 edition of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye festival. The much-anticipated launch is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the Ato Austin Memorial Gardens in Cape Coast, starting at 10:00 AM.
The event will be chaired by Mrs. Charlotte Osei Esq, with the Guest Speaker being Prof. Kobby Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Tourism Development Company Limited. The launch event on February 13 will serve as the official commencement of activities leading up to the main festival in September.
The ceremony is expected to be graced by esteemed traditional leaders, government officials, community members, educational institutions and cultural enthusiasts. Highlights of the launch will include the unveiling of the festival theme, cultural performances, and speeches from dignitaries. As part of activities lined up for this year's Afahye Launch, there will be a procession from Zion Park to the launch venue.
Over the years, the Oguaa Fetu Afahye has gained national and international recognition, attracting visitors from various parts of the world. It showcases the rich history, customs, and traditions of the Oguaa people through rituals, music, dance, and a colorful display of regalia by chiefs and elders. As Cape Coast readies itself for this grand festival, residents and visitors can look forward to a series of events that celebrate unity, culture, and the resilience of the Oguaa people. The launch event on February 13 promises to set the stage for an even bigger and more exciting Fetu Afahye in 2025.
The Fetu Afahye festival is one of the most significant and colorful traditional celebrations in Ghana, held annually by the people of Oguaa (Cape Coast). It is traditionally celebrated in the first week of September, with the grand durbar taking place on the first Saturday of the month. The festival serves as a time for thanksgiving, purification of the land, and a renewal of the community’s cultural heritage.
