The Chief of Simiw and Adontehene of the Edina Traditional Council in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, Nana Kwamina Nguando IV, has called on the government and relevant stakeholders to take urgent steps to ensure the full operation of the Komenda Sugar Factory.
According to Nana Kwamina Nguando IV, the continued delay in getting the factory fully operational has become a major concern for residents, particularly farmers and the youth who had expected the facility to create jobs and open up new economic opportunities in the Municipality. He made the call at the grand durbar of the 2026 Simiw Enyankor Festival, held under the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage, Promoting Unity and Accelerating Sustainable Development.”
Nana Kwamina Nguando IV questioned why the Komenda Sugar Factory, which has the potential to become a major economic driver for KEEA, has struggled to operate fully despite the Municipality being home to several influential personalities in government and public life.
He mentioned the Vice President of Ghana, H.E. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and the Member of Parliament for the Municipality, Hon. Samuel Atta Mills, among prominent personalities with links to the area. The Chief said the presence of such influential personalities should help draw greater attention to the developmental challenges confronting the Municipality, particularly the need to revive industries that can provide employment for the local population.
He stressed that the Komenda Sugar Factory could provide significant opportunities for farmers, young people and businesses in the area if the necessary challenges affecting its operations were addressed. Nana Kwamina Nguando IV therefore appealed to the government to renew efforts towards the revival of the factory and ensure that it operates sustainably.
He said the people of KEEA needed development initiatives that would translate into tangible economic opportunities, particularly for the youth. The Chief further noted that the full operation of the factory could help boost local economic activity, provide a ready market for farmers and create employment opportunities for young people in the Municipality.
Nana Kwamina Nguando IV called for a more practical approach to development, stressing that projects of economic importance to the area must be supported to deliver the intended benefits to the people. The 2026 Simiw Enyankor Festival brought together traditional leaders, government representatives, residents and other stakeholders to celebrate the heritage of Simiw while highlighting key development issues affecting the community.
