The Bank of Ghana (BoG), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has arrested seven women in Accra over the alleged misuse of Ghana cedi banknotes to produce money bouquets, money cakes and other decorative items.
The arrests form part of efforts to protect the integrity of the Ghanaian currency and discourage practices that could damage or unnecessarily alter banknotes.
The women are alleged to have used genuine Ghana cedi notes in the creation of decorative arrangements commonly presented at weddings, birthdays, graduations and other celebrations.
The development has prompted the Bank of Ghana to reiterate its warning to the public against the improper handling and misuse of Ghana cedi banknotes.
The central bank has urged members of the public to treat the currency responsibly and avoid practices that could lead to the destruction, defacement or deterioration of banknotes.
The BoG has also encouraged the public to use appropriate alternatives for decorative purposes rather than incorporating physical banknotes into money bouquets, money cakes and similar arrangements.
The Bank of Ghana says protecting the quality and integrity of the cedi is a shared responsibility and has urged the public to comply with the rules governing the proper use of Ghanaian currency.
