Morocco’s football federation has rejected disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following chaotic scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal.

In an official statement, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) described the penalties as disproportionate and failing to accurately reflect the seriousness and circumstances of the incident. The federation confirmed that it has formally lodged an appeal and will pursue all available legal options to challenge the decision.

CAF’s Disciplinary Committee fined the Moroccan federation $315,000 for misconduct attributed to players, team officials and supporters. In addition, Moroccan players Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari were handed suspensions from CAF competitions.

Senegal was also heavily sanctioned. CAF fined the Senegalese Football Federation $615,000, while head coach Pape Thiaw received a five-match ban from CAF competitions and a personal fine of $100,000. Two Senegalese players were also suspended.

The disciplinary action stems from incidents during the AFCON final played on January 18, which was marred by disorder. Senegal’s team staged a walk-off in protest, while supporters invaded the pitch, forcing interruptions and raising serious safety concerns.

Morocco insists the sanctions do not fairly assess responsibility for the disturbances and has vowed to exhaust all legal avenues in its appeal. As of now, CAF has not publicly responded to the appeal or issued further clarification on the matter.

The outcome of the appeal could have significant implications for both federations and for CAF’s disciplinary approach to major tournament incidents.
