Ghanaian broadcaster Mz Brown, a prominent voice on TW Radio, has opened up about the unique challenges women face in the media industry, describing her journey in broadcasting as both rewarding and demanding.
Speaking in a recent interview, Mz Brown shared that while broadcasting allows her to express her passion and connect with audiences, being a woman in the field often comes with added scrutiny, stereotypes, and unequal opportunities.
“It’s very difficult being a female in the media industry,” she said. “You constantly have to prove yourself twice as much as your male colleagues to be taken seriously. People judge you by appearance before they even listen to what you have to say.”
Mz Brown noted that bias and gender-based expectations remain common, particularly in relation to how women are expected to present themselves on air and on social media. She emphasized that female broadcasters often encounter unfair criticism, harassment, and limited access to career advancement opportunities compared to their male peers.
Despite these challenges, Mz Brown said she remains driven by passion and purpose, using her platform to inspire young women to pursue careers in media with confidence and resilience.
“The key is to stay focused and authentic,” she explained. “You must know your craft, build your brand with integrity, and remember why you started. Passion and hard work always speak louder than bias.”
She also called on media houses and industry leaders to create safer, more supportive environments for women, including mentorship opportunities, professional training, and fair representation in key editorial and management positions.
Mz Brown’s reflections have resonated widely across social media, sparking conversations about gender dynamics in Ghana’s media landscape and the need for sustained advocacy toward gender equality in the profession.
“Media can be a powerful force for change,” she said. “When women’s voices are heard and respected, the industry and the society it serves becomes stronger.”
