GLASGOW 2026: Heartbreak for Ghana as Appeal Reinstates Canada, Drops Team Back to Fourth

Ghana’s hopes of securing a historic Commonwealth Games men’s 4x100m relay bronze have ended in disappointment after a post-race appeal altered the final standings.

In the immediate aftermath of the race, both Canada and South Africa were disqualified for separate infringements, a development that briefly elevated Ghana into the bronze medal position behind Australia and Nigeria. The Ghanaian camp celebrated what appeared to be a well-earned podium finish after an impressive relay performance.

However, the celebrations were short-lived. Following a formal review, Canada’s appeal against its disqualification was upheld, resulting in the North Americans being reinstated as silver medallists, while South Africa’s disqualification remained in place. 

The revised decision pushed Nigeria back into the bronze medal position and left Ghana just outside the medals in fourth place. It was a cruel twist for the Ghanaian quartet, who had produced one of their finest relay performances of the Games and came within touching distance of ending a long wait for a Commonwealth relay medal. 

Despite missing out on the podium, Team Ghana can take pride in a performance that showcased determination, composure and the growing strength of Ghanaian sprinting on the international stage. Although the final verdict denied Ghana a medal, the team’s spirited display will remain one of the country’s standout athletics moments at Glasgow 2026, offering plenty of encouragement for the future.
