Ghanaians living in Spain have been urged to take advantage of a newly announced immigration amnesty by the Spanish government, which is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants.
The call was made by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Spain.
She encouraged eligible nationals to regularise their status under the programme, describing the initiative as a positive step by Spanish authorities.
Spain’s decision will grant legal status to approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants who have resided in the country for at least five months before December 2025. The Vice President assured Ghanaians that the Government of Ghana stands ready to support those seeking to benefit from the process.
The engagement also addressed broader concerns affecting Ghanaians abroad, including personal safety and the need to ensure travel documents are valid and legally obtained.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, clarified that the amnesty will not apply to individuals with criminal records. He revealed that a police officer has been designated to assist applicants in securing clearance from the Ghana Police Service, a key requirement for those seeking to regularise their status before the June 30 deadline.
Mr Ablakwa also provided updates on investigations into the death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia under unclear circumstances. He assured the community that efforts are underway to ensure justice is served.
According to him, these interventions are part of ongoing measures by the government to safeguard the welfare and interests of Ghanaians living in the diaspora.
