Ghana is set to make history as President John Dramani Mahama officially launches the country’s first electronic visa (e-Visa) service on May 25, 2026, coinciding with the celebration of Africa Day.
The launch event is scheduled to take place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra at 9:00 AM and is expected to attract government officials, diplomats, tourism stakeholders, investors and members of the public.
The initiative, led by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Transport, marks a major step toward digital transformation, regional integration and economic growth.
According to information released ahead of the launch, the new e-Visa platform will allow travelers to apply for Ghanaian visas online without the stress of visiting embassies or consulates physically. The system is expected to simplify travel procedures, reduce waiting times and make Ghana a more attractive destination for tourism, business and international partnerships.
One of the biggest highlights of the policy is the announcement that Africans will not pay for visas to visit Ghana. The move has been widely praised as a bold commitment to Pan-African unity, free movement across the continent and the broader vision of African integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The introduction of the e-Visa service is expected to strengthen Ghana’s tourism industry by encouraging more visitors to explore the country’s historical sites, cultural heritage, festivals and business opportunities. Industry players believe the digital system will also improve efficiency, transparency and convenience for international travelers.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, analysts say the move positions Ghana among progressive African nations embracing technology-driven immigration systems to improve accessibility and competitiveness in the global travel market.
The launch on Africa Day also carries symbolic importance, reflecting Ghana’s long-standing role in promoting African unity and cooperation. Many citizens and stakeholders have described the initiative as a forward-thinking decision that could inspire other African countries to adopt similar open-border policies.
As Ghana prepares for the official rollout of the e-Visa service, expectations remain high that the initiative will boost tourism, attract foreign investment and strengthen the country’s image as a welcoming gateway to Africa.
TW Radio will continue to monitor developments surrounding the launch and bring listeners updates on how the new system will operate and benefit travelers across the continent.
