Ghanaian international Thomas Partey is set to become a free agent this summer after Villarreal CF reportedly decided not to activate the extension clause in his contract.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined the Spanish club last year following the expiration of his contract with Arsenal FC, signing a one-year deal with an option for an additional season.

However, despite making 30 appearances across all competitions during the current campaign, Partey has struggled to maintain a consistent starting role.

His tenure at the Estadio de la Cerámica has been hindered by recurring fitness setbacks and minor injuries that have prevented him from finding his best form under head coach Marcelino.

With the La Liga season nearing its conclusion, reports suggest that Villarreal’s management has informed the veteran midfielder they will not be retaining his services beyond June 30, 2026.

The decision is believed to be influenced by both the player’s injury record and the club's desire to restructure their midfield profile for the upcoming season.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his club career, Partey remains a cornerstone of the Ghana national team.

He is widely expected to be named in the Black Stars' final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off next month across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars, now under the guidance of head coach Carlos Queiroz, have been drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Ghana will begin their tournament journey against Panama in Toronto on June 17, as they look to improve upon their group-stage exits in the 2014 and 2022 editions.
