Fernando Alonso remains optimistic about Aston Martin’s future despite the team enduring a frustrating and underwhelming start to the 2026 Formula 1 season under the sport’s new regulations.
Aston Martin entered the new era with high expectations following its major partnership with Honda and the arrival of legendary designer Adrian Newey, but results on track have so far failed to match the growing excitement surrounding the project.
The team has struggled throughout the opening races of the season with reliability issues, inconsistent pace and difficulties adapting to the new generation of Formula 1 cars. In several races, Aston Martin battled simply to finish consistently, with Miami becoming the first weekend of the season where both cars successfully saw the chequered flag.
Despite that achievement, the team still finished outside the points, highlighting just how difficult the opening phase of the campaign has been for the Silverstone-based outfit. However, Fernando Alonso believes the current struggles are part of a longer-term rebuilding process and insists the team’s future remains bright.
“Next year, in year two, I have no doubts that the project is going to be more prepared than it has been in year one,” Alonso explained. The two-time world champion suggested that adapting to Formula 1’s major regulation changes takes time, especially with a completely new engine partnership and evolving aerodynamic concepts.
Alonso also appears confident that Aston Martin’s growing infrastructure and technical leadership will eventually help the team become competitive again. The pressure surrounding Aston Martin has increased significantly due to the team’s aggressive investment over recent years. New facilities, high-profile engineering signings and strong financial backing raised expectations that the team could become a genuine championship contender during the new regulation cycle.
But while rivals like Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren appear to have adapted more quickly, Aston Martin currently finds itself trying to close the gap after a disappointing opening half of the season. Still, Alonso’s comments suggest there is calmness internally within the team, with a belief that 2026 may simply be the foundation year for a much stronger 2027 campaign.
With Adrian Newey’s influence expected to grow and Honda continuing development on the power unit side, Aston Martin will hope patience eventually turns into performance as the project continues to evolve.
