Sam George vows to see Anti-LGBTQ bill passed

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his determination to see the anti-LGBTQI bill passed, stating that his re-election reflects a clear mandate from his constituents to complete what he describes as unfinished business.

Speaking at a stakeholder session organised by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee for a clause-by-clause review of the bill, Mr. George said his return to the 9th Parliament was largely influenced by expectations from his chiefs and constituents to ensure the legislation is passed.

He disclosed that the bill has been reintroduced in collaboration with his co-sponsors and is currently progressing through the required parliamentary procedures.

According to him, the proposed law has already undergone rigorous scrutiny over an extended period, including detailed consideration by parliamentary committees and debates on the floor of the House spanning more than two and a half years.

Mr. George recalled that Parliament unanimously approved the bill on February 28, 2024, describing the decision as a landmark moment.

He further indicated that Ghana’s legislative efforts appear to have inspired similar moves in other African countries, pointing to Uganda and Senegal as examples of nations that have adopted and, in some instances, strengthened comparable laws.

He emphasised that those countries have not faced economic sanctions following the passage of such legislation.

While pushing for swift action, Mr. George stressed the importance of adhering strictly to due process to avoid potential legal setbacks.

He referenced earlier court challenges against the bill in 2024, noting that its ability to withstand those cases was due to the thorough procedures followed by Parliament.

He therefore warned against any attempt to fast-track the process in a manner that could leave the bill vulnerable to future legal disputes, urging that all constitutional and parliamentary requirements be carefully observed even as efforts are made to expedite its passage.
