Over 48 Aayalolo buses have been repaired and deployed in Accra - GAPTE

The Management of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has disclosed that over 48 Aayalolo buses which were previously grounded due to mechanical faults have been repaired and deployed on major routes across Accra.

GAPTE says this brings the total number of Aayalolo buses operating across the Greater Accra Region to 128.

The move forms part of efforts to improve public transportation and reduce the congestion in the capital during peak hours.

The Managing Director of GAPTE, Awudu Dawuda, made the announcement when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal.

According to him, GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and decided to increase mobility by repairing over 48 buses which were not operating to increase the number of vehicles available for operations.

“The 80 buses that we inherited – the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra region – and so we had to repair over 48 buses and these buses have been added to the 80 buses and so we currently have 128 in our corridors. If I say corridors, I am talking about the routes we are on.”

The visit was to evaluate the Aayalolo bus service's operations and proffer ways to enhance public transportation and boost commuter efficiency.

According to Dawuda, increasing the number of buses in service has been a top goal for GAPTE, especially given the need to enhance mobility and assist in resolving ongoing traffic congestion in the Greater Accra Region.
