The rich history of Cape Coast is deeply intertwined with the traditions of its Asafo Companies, which have served as the backbone of community organization, security, and cultural identity for centuries. Among the most prominent of these companies are the Bentsir Asafo Company and the Anaafo Asafo Company. However, many people may not know that these two renowned Asafo groups were once a single company.

Historical accounts indicate that Bentsir and Anaafo originally operated as one Asafo Company, united in purpose and responsibility. Asafo Companies among the Fante people were formed to defend communities, maintain order, and mobilize citizens during times of conflict. They also played significant roles in social and cultural activities, many of which continue to be celebrated during the annual Oguaa Fetu Afahye.

The split between the two groups is believed to have been influenced by the growth and expansion of Cape Coast over time. As the town developed and its population increased, it became necessary to create separate administrative and military structures to effectively manage the different sections of the community. This led to the formation of distinct Asafo divisions, with Bentsir serving one part of the town and Anaafo serving another.

The names themselves reflect their geographical locations within Cape Coast. "Bentsir" refers to the area near the seaside, while "Anaafo" refers to the inland section of the town. The division allowed each company to focus on the welfare, protection, and organization of the people within their respective jurisdictions.

Over the years, both Asafo Companies developed their own unique identities, traditions, flags, shrines, symbols, and leadership structures. Friendly rivalry emerged between them, particularly during festivals and ceremonial occasions, adding colour and excitement to Cape Coast's cultural landscape.

Today, Bentsir and Anaafo remain two of the most influential Asafo Companies in Oguaa. Their vibrant participation during the Fetu Afahye celebrations, including processions, traditional displays, drumming, dancing, and community activities, continues to showcase the enduring legacy of the Asafo institution.

As Cape Coast prepares for Oguaa Fetu Afahye 2026, the story of Bentsir and Anaafo serves as a reminder of how the city's history has evolved while preserving traditions that continue to unite generations of Oguaa people.
