A landslide at Guinea’s largest landfill in the capital, Conakry, has killed 30 people, according to government officials.

The incident occurred early Sunday after heavy rains caused a large heap of waste at the Dar Es Salam landfill to collapse, burying nearby makeshift homes.

Six people were seriously injured, while several homes were destroyed. Rescue teams were searching through the debris for survivors.

The landfill had been scheduled for closure on Sunday, and residents living nearby had previously received eviction notices. However, some people were still in the area when the landslide occurred.

Territorial Administration and Decentralization Minister Dienabou Touré said the government would relocate the families who remain in the affected area.
