President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Board of Trustees overseeing Ghana’s National Cathedral project and directed that the project be handed over to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs by October 31, 2026.

The directive requires the trustees to work with the project consultant to facilitate the formal handover of the project site and related matters to the Ministry.

The move gives the government direct control of the National Cathedral project as it considers its next steps. The government has not yet announced a final decision on whether the project will be continued, redesigned or otherwise restructured.

The dissolution follows previous government actions concerning the National Cathedral, including the dissolution of the National Cathedral Secretariat and calls for investigations into the management and financing of the project.

The October 31 deadline is therefore expected to mark a significant transition in the management of the controversial project, with the Ministry set to take responsibility for determining its future.
