Mahama Departs Accra for 81st UN General Assembly in New York

President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York, United States, to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81).

The assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All,” which focuses on strengthening confidence in multilateral institutions and addressing global challenges through international cooperation.

During his participation, President Mahama is expected to host two major side events focused on Africa’s development and the advancement of historical justice.

On Monday, September 21, 2026, the President will host a high-level event on the Accra Reset, bringing together world leaders and stakeholders to discuss “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.” The event is expected to explore ways of reshaping global development cooperation to better respond to the needs and priorities of developing countries.

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, President Mahama will host another side event focusing on the next steps toward reparatory justice. Discussions will centre on moving from commitments to concrete action on international cooperation for the return and restitution of cultural properties and heritage.

President Mahama’s participation at the UN General Assembly provides an opportunity for Ghana to contribute to discussions on global development, Africa’s priorities and historical justice on the international stage.
