Africa celebrated a landmark moment at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday as Ivory Coast became the first team from the continent to record a victory, defeating Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a dramatic late goal from Amad.

The Elephants appeared to be heading for a frustrating draw in their opening Group E encounter after a tense and closely contested match at both ends of the pitch. However, with the game entering its final moments, Amad stepped up to deliver a decisive blow, scoring in the 90th minute to send the Ivorian bench and supporters into jubilant celebrations.

The victory is a significant boost not only for Ivory Coast but for Africa as a whole, with ten nations representing the continent at the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup. As one of Africa's leading contenders, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champions have arrived at the tournament carrying high expectations, and they showed their resilience and determination when it mattered most.

The South Americans were arguably the better side for long periods of the contest and came agonisingly close to finding the breakthrough on multiple occasions. Ecuador struck the crossbar twice in the first half and created several dangerous opportunities, but they were repeatedly denied by a disciplined Ivorian defence and some inspired goalkeeping

Having weathered the storm, Ivory Coast gradually grew into the game and refused to settle for a point. Their persistence was rewarded in dramatic fashion when Amad found the winning goal in the closing stages, ensuring the Elephants started their World Cup campaign with maximum points.

With several African nations still to begin their campaigns, including Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo and Cabo Verde, Ivory Coast's triumph has provided the continent with an early reason to celebrate and renewed hope that Africa can make a major impact on football's biggest stage.
