Former Asante Kotoko captain and Durban City goalkeeper Frederick Asare has expressed confidence in the Black Stars ahead of their FIFA World Cup campaign, insisting the team has what it takes to make a strong impact despite doubts from some quarters.
Speaking exclusively on Akoma FM, the Ghana international rejected suggestions that the current Black Stars squad is weaker than previous teams, stressing that the players possess the quality and ability to compete at the highest level.
"This isn't a weaker Black Stars team as many see it. I believe in the team and their capabilities to do well," Asare said.
The shot-stopper emphasized the importance of Ghana's opening Group Stage fixture against Panama, describing it as a crucial game that could set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
"We only need to start on a strong note, especially in our opening game against Panama. A win in that game will boost the confidence of the playing body. They should just remain focused and very determined, and I'm pretty sure we will go far in this competition."
Asare, who featured for Ghana during the World Cup qualifying campaign, urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team and maintain belief in the players as they seek to make history on football's biggest stage.
When asked whether Ghana could realistically win the World Cup, the former Kotoko captain admitted the challenge would be enormous but refused to rule out the possibility.
"It's very difficult achieving that feat now, but in football you never say never. So it's possible we can win it. Ghanaians just have to believe in the team and have strong faith. Things will go well."
The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, with hopes of surpassing their historic quarter-final finish at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
