IGP orders police escort for GPL clubs following Berekum Chelsea tragedy

The Ghana Police Service has ordered a major security upgrade for Ghana Premier League teams, directing all regional and district commanders to provide armed police escorts whenever top‑flight clubs travel for matches. Under the new directive from the Inspector‑General of Police, at least two armed officers must accompany each team within their jurisdiction, as the force seeks to tighten protection for players, coaches, and officials on the road.
Why the new escort order was issued
The move comes in direct response to the armed robbery attack on Berekum Chelsea’s team bus on April 12, 2026, which killed 20‑year‑old winger Dominic Frimpong. The club was returning from a league match against Samartex when gunmen blocked the Bibiani–Goaso road, opened fire on the bus, and forced players and staff into nearby bushes to escape. Frimpong, who was hit by gunfire, later died in hospital, becoming the only confirmed fatality in the incident.
How the security measures will work
The Ghana Police Service says the escorts are intended to restore confidence in domestic football and deter armed gangs from targeting teams on often poorly patrolled inter‑regional routes. Security will be coordinated with the Ghana Football Association, with police commanders expected to plan convoys ahead of all fixtures, ensuring that every traveling Black Stars‑level club has visible, armed protection.
Broader impact on player safety and the league
The fatal attack on Berekum Chelsea has reignited long‑standing concerns about the safety of football teams on Ghana’s highways, where similar incidents have occurred in recent years. Now that armed escorts are mandated, clubs may see safer journeys, but the extra police presence will also raise planning and logistical demands for matchday travel.
Ongoing investigations and arrests
Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed the arrest of the alleged gang leader and another suspect in connection with the Berekum Chelsea ambush, as investigations continue to trace other possible perpetrators. The new security regime is being framed as both a tribute to Frimpong and a practical step to ensure that no other Ghanaian footballer loses their life just because they are travelling to play a professional match.
