Cape Coast Set for Economic Transformation with 24-Hour Market Initiative

The 24-hour economy under the National Democratic Congress is not just about keeping markets open all night. It is about creating a system where economic activities run continuously, using shifts, proper infrastructure, and support services so people can work, trade, and do business at any time of the day.
The idea behind directing Assemblies to use part of the DACF to build 24-hour markets is to create organized, modern commercial centres that can operate efficiently both day and night while solving unemployment and infrastructure challenges.
Why all these facilities are necessary
A 24-hour market cannot function like a normal market. It needs to operate like a small city on its own, and that is why all the listed facilities are important:
1. Lockable shops, open sheds, and pavement spaces ensure that different categories of traders small, medium, and large can all operate within the same space. This promotes inclusiveness.
2. Warehouses and cold stores are critical, especially in a place like Cape Coast, where fishing is a major activity. They help preserve goods, reduce waste, and allow traders to sell over a longer period instead of rushing.
3. Lorry terminals and truck parks make it easier for goods to be transported at any time, reducing congestion and improving distribution.
4. Police post, fire station, and clinic are essential for safety. No one will feel comfortable trading at night without proper security and emergency services.
5. Sanitation facilities like toilets, drainage, and refuse points ensure cleanliness. A 24-hour market without proper sanitation would quickly become unhealthy and unattractive.
6. Food courts, restaurants, and shops keep the place active and support people who spend long hours there.
7. Women’s bank and information centre support business growth by improving access to finance and coordination.
8. Creche and hostel facilities make it easier for traders, especially women, to manage both work and family responsibilities.
9. Disability-friendly infrastructure ensures that everyone can participate in the economy.
What it will do for Cape Coast
For Cape Coast, this project can have a strong impact:
1. It will create jobs for young people, especially through shift work
2. It will boost local trade and increase income levels
3 It will support the fishing industry, allowing fish to be sold and stored at any time
4. It will reduce congestion in existing markets and improve organization
5. It will keep the city economically active even at night, instead of everything shutting down early
Bottom line
The 24-hour market is not just about trading at night. It is about building a modern, structured economic system where business can happen at any time, more people can find work, and cities like Cape Coast can grow faster.
If done well, it can turn Cape Coast into a more active, productive, and opportunity-driven city.
