The government has declared Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, 2026 as national general cleaning days in the seven regions affected by recent floods, as part of efforts to reduce the risk of further flooding ahead of expected heavy rains.

The directive forms part of measures adopted by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to improve environmental sanitation and clear drains and other waterways. The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Presidency Communications on Monday, July 6, 2026, and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The two-day exercise, on the theme “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods,” is intended to mobilize residents to clean their communities and help prevent flooding. The statement urged all citizens to participate.

According to the statement, the President has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and lead the cleanup in their respective communities.

The exercise will be carried out in two phases.  On Friday, July 10, personnel from the security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and waste management companies will begin the exercise.
On Saturday, July 11, members of the public will join the security agencies and the assemblies to continue the cleanup.

Activities will include desilting choked drains to improve the free flow of water, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads and highways, and cleaning public places such as markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and communal waste collection points.

The statement explained that the exercise had become necessary because indiscriminate littering and plastic waste had blocked many drainage systems, contributing to floods that destroyed property and claimed lives.
