The people of Elmina are once again preparing to celebrate the revered Edina Bakatue Festival, one of Ghana's oldest and most significant traditional festivals. Scheduled to take place from July 6 to July 11, 2026, the festival will bring together chiefs, residents, tourists, and dignitaries to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Edina Traditional Area.

Bakatue, which translates as "the opening of the lagoon," marks the official commencement of the fishing season in Elmina. The festival is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Edina people and serves as a period of thanksgiving, reflection, and prayers for a prosperous year ahead. The celebration is centered around the Benya Lagoon, which plays a vital role in the livelihood and identity of the people.

This year's festival features a week-long lineup of cultural, sporting, and entertainment activities. Highlights include the grand opening ceremony, canoe regatta, food parade and cooking competition, Miss Edina Bakatue pageant, dance battles, a 10-kilometre road race, masqueraders' display, volleyball tournament, musical concert, guided town tour, and the grand durbar of chiefs at the historic Elmina Castle.

One of the most symbolic moments of the festival remains the traditional rites performed at the Benya Lagoon. These ceremonies signify the lifting of restrictions on fishing activities and the renewal of the covenant between the people and their ancestral deities. Ahead of the festival, the Elmina Traditional Council observed its customary six-week ban on lagoon activities and noise-making as part of the spiritual preparations for the celebrations.

The festival also serves as an important platform for promoting tourism and economic activity within the Central Region. Visitors from across Ghana and beyond are expected to participate in the celebrations, experience the unique traditions of the Edina people, and explore the rich historical attractions of Elmina.

As the countdown to Bakatue 2026 continues, the people of Edina remain committed to preserving their cultural identity while showcasing the beauty, resilience, and hospitality that have defined Elmina for generations. The festival promises to be a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and community spirit, reaffirming its place as one of Ghana's most treasured cultural events.

The Edina Bakatue Festival 2026 attracted a number of distinguished guests and diplomatic representatives, highlighting the growing international appeal of the festival. Among the notable personalities in attendance were the Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, who joined traditional leaders, government officials, and members of the public to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Edina Traditional Area. Their presence underscored the importance of the Bakatue Festival as a platform for cultural exchange, tourism promotion, and international friendship.

Speaking at the event, stakeholders emphasized the need to preserve Ghana's cultural heritage while leveraging festivals such as Bakatue to strengthen tourism and economic development. The participation of the diplomatic community further demonstrated the festival's significance beyond Ghana's borders and its role in fostering global appreciation for the traditions and history of the people of Elmina.
