Ghana Water Limited has announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam after water levels rose above the maximum operating limit of 48 feet.

In a statement dated May 27, the company said all spill gates of the dam have been opened to release excess water in order to protect the structural integrity and safety of the dam.

According to management, controlled spilling operations are routinely carried out during the rainy season whenever water levels exceed 45 feet to reduce pressure on the dam and prevent possible disaster.

The company further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast additional torrential rains upstream, which are expected to increase inflows into the dam.

As a result, the controlled spillage exercise is expected to continue until water levels recede to a safe operating level.

Ghana Water Limited indicated that the exercise could continue for several months depending on rainfall patterns and the volume of inflows into the dam area.

Residents living along the downstream course of the river have therefore been strongly advised to evacuate vulnerable areas immediately to avoid potential loss of life and property.

The company also noted that the National Disaster Management Organisation and various district assemblies are preparing to remove structures and obstructions preventing the free flow of water into the sea.

Management urged the relevant authorities to carry out the exercise as quickly as possible to minimise the risk of flooding in affected communities.

Ghana Water Limited reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dam infrastructure while ensuring public safety and called on residents to cooperate with all emergency directives issued by state institutions.
