Crystal Palace win first European trophy after Mateta fires Eagles to Conference League glory

Crystal Palace etched their name into European football history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig. The triumph marks the club’s first-ever European trophy and caps off a remarkable era under manager Oliver Glasner, who leaves Selhurst Park after delivering unprecedented success to the South London side.
The final at the Red Bull Arena carried huge significance for both clubs, with Palace and Rayo competing in their first European final. Unsurprisingly, nerves were evident early on as both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in a tense and tactical opening half.
Rayo Vallecano showed flashes of danger through Alemao and Unai Lopez, but neither could find the breakthrough for the Spanish side. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, slowly grew into the contest and came closest before halftime when Tyrick Mitchell headed narrowly wide after being picked out brilliantly by Adam Wharton.
The decisive moment arrived six minutes into the second half. Young midfielder Adam Wharton drove a powerful effort towards goal, forcing Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla into a save. However, the rebound fell kindly to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who reacted quickest to stab the ball home from close range and send the Palace supporters into celebration.
The goal was Mateta’s 16th of the season and perhaps his most important in Palace colours. The French striker almost departed the club in January before a proposed move to AC Milan collapsed following a knee injury. Months later, he became the hero of Palace’s greatest European night.
Rayo Vallecano attempted to respond and nearly equalised when Yeremy Pino struck both posts with a dangerous free-kick. Pino later created another opportunity for Mateta, but Batalla produced a superb save to keep the Spanish side alive. Despite their efforts, Rayo struggled to break down Palace’s disciplined defence in the closing stages.
For Oliver Glasner, the victory serves as the perfect farewell. Since arriving at Palace, the Austrian transformed the club from relegation battlers into serial winners. After leading the Eagles to FA Cup glory against Manchester City and lifting the Community Shield against Liverpool, he now departs with a European title added to his legacy.
Crystal Palace’s victory also continues an impressive season for English clubs in Europe. Palace join Aston Villa, who captured the Europa League title, while Arsenal now have the opportunity to complete a historic treble of European trophies for English sides when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
For Palace fans, however, this night in Leipzig will forever remain unforgettable — the night the Eagles conquered Europe.
