Equatorial Guinea reaffirms its commitment to reparatory justice

The First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, His Excellency Gaudencio Mohaba Messu, has reaffirmed the commitment of his country to the pursuit of Reparatory Justice.

He said this on 18th June, 2026, when he was speaking at the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the Landmark United Nations Resolution on the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans held in Accra, Ghana.

In his statement, he mentioned that the adoption of the United Nations Resolution A/RES/80/250 is a fundamental milestone in the international community’s recognition of the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and Racialized Chattel Enslavement of Africans as the Gravest Crime against Humanity. He said that the resolution represents an indispensable moral affirmation and recognition of historical truth that had for long been overlooked.

Outlining Equatorial Guinea’s perspective on reparatory justice, he stated that it extends beyond material compensation to include responsibilities, support for education, restitution of cultural heritage and promotion of cooperation mechanisms, among others.

He further underscored the importance of deepening the ties between Africa and its diaspora, which he described as an inseparable part of Africa. He added that reparatory justice requires creating conditions necessary for future generations to thrive in dignity.

The First Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of the commemoration of Juneteenth at the Christainsborg Castle, Osu and noted that it symbolizes the bond between Africa and its diaspora. He expressed confidence that through collective action, progress would be made in addressing historical injustices and advancing a just future for all.
