The First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Dramani Mahama, has commissioned the newly renovated and fully equipped Anyima Health Centre in the Kintampo South District of the Bono East Region, marking a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare for rural communities.
The health facility, renovated through the efforts of the Lordina Foundation, will provide essential medical services to more than 3,000 residents in Anyima and neighbouring communities. The project was initiated following advocacy by the Anyima Queenmother, Nana Saa Gyamfuaa II, who highlighted the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure in the area.
The upgraded facility is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery by expanding maternal, emergency and outpatient services. The intervention is also aimed at reducing the burden on residents who previously had to travel long distances to access medical care.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Mahama expressed concern about Ghana’s maternal and infant mortality rates. She noted that maternal mortality in the country remains close to 300 deaths per 100,000 live births, while infant mortality stands at approximately 32 deaths per 1,000 live births.
According to her, these figures represent more than statistics. “Behind these numbers are mothers, daughters, sisters and precious children whose lives could be saved with timely access to quality healthcare facilities and skilled birth attendants,” she stated.
Mrs. Mahama emphasized the importance of strengthening primary healthcare systems, particularly in underserved communities, to ensure that women and children receive timely medical attention. She also announced that the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, will soon launch a nationwide Primary Health Care Programme. The initiative is expected to provide free healthcare services at community-based facilities such as the Anyima Health Centre.
The commissioning of the facility reflects ongoing efforts by government and private foundations to bridge the healthcare access gap in rural Ghana and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
