Ghanaian musician Wendy Shay has issued a public clarification regarding her relationship with her young fan and mentee, Tracy Shay, following criticism over the child’s recent stage appearance in Koforidua.

In a lengthy video shared on social media, Wendy Shay addressed concerns raised after Tracy Shay appeared on stage at an event in Koforidua, stressing that she does not manage or control the child’s movements. According to Wendy Shay, while she mentors Tracy and is committed to grooming her into a future music star, she is neither the child’s guardian nor her manager.

Wendy Shay explained that her role is limited to mentorship and guidance, adding that she does not live with Tracy Shay and is not involved in decisions regarding the young girl’s attendance or participation in events unless she is formally informed. She emphasized that she had no prior knowledge of Tracy’s appearance on stage in Koforidua and only became aware after videos of the performance surfaced online.

“I mentor Tracy and encourage her talent, but I don’t control where she goes or what events she attends,” Wendy Shay stated, urging the public to understand the clear distinction between mentorship and guardianship.

The clarification comes in the wake of Tracy Shay’s performance at singer Sista Afia’s all-white party, an event organized to mark Sista Afia’s 10th anniversary in the Ghanaian music industry. Tracy’s appearance at the celebration sparked debate among some attendees and social media users, with questions raised about the appropriateness of a child performing on such a stage.

Wendy Shay’s statement seeks to put the matter to rest, as she called for fairness and restraint in the criticism directed at her. She reiterated her commitment to supporting Tracy Shay’s talent responsibly, while encouraging parents, guardians, and event organizers to play their respective roles in safeguarding young talents within the entertainment industry.

The issue has once again reignited discussions around child participation in entertainment events and the shared responsibility of mentors, parents, and organizers in ensuring the welfare of young performers in Ghana’s music scene.
