Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has disclosed that 1,000 tickets have been secured in advance for Black Stars supporters ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the tournament as one of the most expensive for fans.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on June 1, he said supporting Ghana at the tournament will be difficult due to the World Cup being hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, which increases travel and logistical costs.
He said Ghana has no previous experience managing supporters for a World Cup in North America, as the country did not participate in the 1994 edition hosted in the United States.
According to him, FIFA’s advance ticket sales enabled Ghana to secure tickets early before prices increased.
“We ordered for 1,000. I believe that that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money,” he said.
He clarified that the 1,000 tickets form part of broader arrangements, noting that the Ghana Football Association and other organisations have also secured additional tickets to support fans.
“I wouldn’t say only a thousand. The FA itself has secured some tickets. We have other organisations that also have secured tickets. They are all sponsoring Ghanaians to be able to get in there,” he added.
He expressed confidence that more than 1,000 Ghanaian supporters will attend the tournament through combined efforts of stakeholders.
His comments follow an announcement by President John Dramani Mahama that government will provide match tickets for Ghanaians in the diaspora who wish to support the Black Stars, while noting that full sponsorship of large groups from Ghana would not be feasible due to high costs.
Ghana will compete in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
