A public comment made during a recent television discussion has triggered widespread reaction from fans of Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, popularly known as the Shatta Movement, leading to an apology and renewed conversations about respect for creatives and their communities.

During a JoyNews programme on January 20, 2026, Awal Mohammed made a remark describing Shatta Wale’s fans in a manner many considered offensive. The comment quickly sparked backlash across social media, with members of the Shatta Movement expressing disappointment and calling for accountability.

In response to the criticism, Awal Mohammed issued an apology, explaining that the statement was a slip of the tongue. He admitted the choice of words was unnecessary and emphasized that he did not intend to insult or demean anyone. He further noted that the remark did not reflect his personal values and expressed regret over the offence caused.

Shatta Wale later reacted to the issue, using the moment to highlight the broader impact of his work beyond music. According to the award-winning dancehall artiste, his platform has contributed to youth empowerment, job creation, and projecting Ghanaian talent onto the global stage. He also urged media practitioners and public commentators to apply fairness and balance when engaging voices within the creative space.

Adding to the reactions, Shatta Wale’s PR Manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah, described the comment as reckless and disappointing, stressing that public figures must be mindful of the language they use, especially when addressing large communities of young people.

Meanwhile, fans of the artiste, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, have continued to express their displeasure, with many insisting that entertainers and their supporters deserve respect and recognition for their contributions to society.

The incident has reignited conversations around responsible public commentary and the need for mutual respect between media personalities, public figures, and the creative arts community.
