Security personnel in Nkwanta have intercepted a quantity of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations conducted in the Oti Region.
This occurred on Sunday, 17.
A statement issued by the Police said that in the first operation, a night operational patrol team intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P carrying passengers on board at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the retrieval of seven hundred and fifty (750) live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes, each packed with 250 rounds of ammunition.
During preliminary interrogation, suspect Hudu Mahama, 53 and serving as the driver's mate, admitted ownership of the ammunition.
In a separate operation on the same day, a joint Police/Military team, while pursuing a suspect rider, retrieved a box containing one hundred and twenty-five (125) AA cartridges and one hundred and twenty-five (125) BB cartridges, making a total of two hundred and fifty (250) rounds of ammunition, after the box fell from the suspect's motorbike. The unidentified rider, however, managed to escape.
Preliminary inspection of the retrieved box led to the arrest of suspect Christian Kwasi Alonise, 57.
Both suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
The retrieved exhibits have been retained for evidential purposes, while efforts continue to retrieve the second box carried away by the unidentified rider.
The Joint Security team said it remains committed to the restoration and maintenance of lasting peace and security in the area.
