Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84. His death was confirmed on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his family, with his wife and fellow actress, Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, announcing his passing. 

Silva paid tribute to her husband, describing him as a “dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle” and affectionately referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”

Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, with a career spanning several decades across stage, television and film. Before becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and built experience in British theatre and television. His professional credits included work with major organisations such as the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and other international productions. 

After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a major force in the country’s growing film industry. He appeared in hundreds of productions and was widely respected for his commanding screen presence, versatility and ability to portray complex characters. His work helped establish the professional standards associated with Nigeria’s modern film and theatre industries.

Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in film production, theatre and training. Together with Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group, which includes Lufodo Productions, Lufodo Distribution and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. The institution has contributed to the development and training of aspiring performers and other professionals in the creative industry. 

His contribution to Nigerian entertainment was also recognised nationally. In 2011, he was conferred with the Nigerian national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his service to the arts and entertainment industry. 

Jacobs’ death also brings to an end the life of an actor whose influence extended well beyond individual films. For generations of Nigerian and African audiences, he represented an era of disciplined stagecraft, powerful storytelling and veteran screen acting.

His passing is particularly poignant because his family had repeatedly been forced to dismiss false reports of his death over the years. In 2024, for instance, his son publicly confirmed that Jacobs was alive after another death rumour circulated online. In July 2026, Joke Silva had celebrated her husband’s 84th birthday, referring to him as “Sir J, The Lion of Lufodo” and expressing gratitude for his life. 

With his passing, Nollywood and the wider African entertainment industry mourn the loss of one of its most distinguished veterans. His performances, theatrical work, mentorship and contribution to the development of Nigeria’s creative sector leave behind a legacy that will continue to be remembered by colleagues, filmmakers, actors and audiences across generations.
