EPA Shuts Down Empire Cement Ghana Limited Over Air Pollution

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of Empire Cement Ghana Limited following investigations into public complaints over severe air pollution allegedly linked to the company’s operations.

According to the EPA, its investigations identified sustained particulate and gaseous emissions from the facility, raising concerns about the potential impact on surrounding communities and the environment. The Authority also cited the company for failing to submit required quarterly environmental monitoring returns and for not installing appropriate modern pollution-control systems to adequately manage emissions from its operations.

Following the findings, Empire Cement Ghana Limited has been directed to halt all operations until it meets the required national environmental standards and addresses the environmental impacts identified by the EPA. The company will also be required to obtain written clearance from the EPA before resuming operations.

The EPA has reiterated that environmental compliance is a mandatory requirement for industrial facilities and stressed the importance of responsible industrial practices in protecting public health and the environment. The shutdown follows public concerns over air quality and highlights the role of regulatory enforcement in ensuring that industrial activities do not pose unacceptable risks to surrounding communities.
