Max Verstappen’s highly anticipated debut at the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours ended in heartbreak after a late mechanical failure destroyed his chances of victory while leading the race.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours is one of the most demanding endurance races in motorsport, held annually at the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany — a track often nicknamed “The Green Hell” because of its extreme difficulty, changing weather conditions and dangerous high-speed corners. The event sees teams battle nonstop for 24 hours through day and night, testing driver stamina, reliability and teamwork.
Verstappen entered the event for the first time alongside experienced GT drivers Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon and Dani Juncadella in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 run by Verstappen Racing. Expectations were already high before the race, with many fans eager to see how the four-time Formula 1 world champion would perform outside F1.
The team quickly became one of the standout performers of the weekend, steadily climbing into the lead and controlling large portions of the race overnight. Verstappen himself delivered several impressive stints during difficult conditions and helped the #3 Mercedes-AMG build a comfortable advantage heading into the final hours.
However, disaster struck with just over three hours remaining when the car suddenly suffered a driveshaft failure shortly after Verstappen handed the car over to teammate Dani Juncadella. The issue forced the Mercedes into the garage for lengthy repairs and immediately ended any realistic hopes of victory.
At the time of the problem, Verstappen’s car had been leading by more than 30 seconds and looked on course for a sensational win on debut. Instead, the setback handed victory to another Mercedes-AMG entry, while Verstappen’s team eventually returned to the track many laps down simply to finish the race.
Despite the disappointing ending, Verstappen remained positive about the experience and praised endurance racing after the event. The Dutch driver admitted the Nürburgring’s unique challenge and atmosphere made the race special, and reports suggest he is already interested in returning in future years if his Formula 1 schedule allows it.
The event also attracted massive global attention largely because of Verstappen’s participation, with organisers reportedly recording over 350,000 spectators across the weekend — one of the biggest crowds in the history of the race.
