Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, has been enstooled as the Safohen of Bentsir No. 1 Asafo Company in Cape Coast, taking on the stool name Nana Nhyiraba Koguwa II.
The colourful traditional ceremony took place on Friday morning during her visit to the historic coastal city, where chiefs, elders, and members of the Asafo company officially installed her into the prestigious traditional role.
Her enstoolment is widely regarded as recognition of her immense contribution to tourism development, leadership, and national growth, particularly her dedication to promoting Ghana’s rich culture and heritage on the global stage.
Prior to her appointment as CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority by President John Dramani Mahama, Maame Efua Houadjeto had built an impressive career spanning hospitality, tourism, event management, and communications. She previously held managerial positions within the hotel industry and is the founder of Image Consortium Group, an events and marketing company.
Beyond her professional achievements, she is also a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, having served as former Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She also contested to become the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Mfantsiman Constituency.
Under her stewardship at the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana’s tourism and cultural promotion campaigns have gained heightened international visibility. Recently, she was honoured as a Global Cultural Ambassador at a Pre-Grammy Awards event in Los Angeles in recognition of her efforts in promoting Ghanaian culture and tourism internationally.
Her installation as Safohen further deepens the link between traditional leadership and tourism development in Cape Coast, one of Ghana’s most iconic tourism destinations, celebrated for its historic castles, vibrant festivals, and rich cultural heritage.
