The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor has said that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has proven to be one of the most practical and accessible clean cooking fuels available to households and businesses across the country.
He said Ghana has made steady progress in expanding LPG access, with national penetration now estimated at about forty three percent (43%).
While this represents significant progress compared to previous decades, Dr Jinapor said that it also reminds that there is still considerable work to be done to reach millions of Ghanaians who continue to rely on traditional fuels for cooking and other domestic uses.
He said this during the World LPG Day celebration in Accra on Monday, June 8, on the theme: “LPG: Pass It Forward” .
Dr Jinapor said that the importance of LPG extends beyond convenience and affordability. Increased LPG adoption contributes to better health outcomes by reducing exposure to harmful indoor air pollution, particularly among women and children.
It also helps reduce pressure on our forests by lowering dependence on firewood and charcoal, thereby supporting our environmental and climate objectives.
"As we work towards a low-carbon future, it is important to recognize that the energy transition is a journey. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and modern bioenergy will play an increasingly important role in Ghana’s energy mix. However, the transition must be practical, orderly and inclusive.
"In this regard, natural gas and LPG remain critical transition fuels that provide cleaner alternatives while supporting economic growth, energy security and industrial development. They offer a realistic pathway for reducing emissions as we scale up investments in renewable energy technologies," he said.
He further said that the Government of Ghana remains firmly committed to accelerating the country’s green transition.
"This commitment is reflected in the establishment of the Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund, which is designed to mobilize resources and support investments in renewable energy deployment, clean energy technologies, energy efficiency initiatives and other interventions that advance Ghana’s climate and sustainable development goals. The Fund demonstrates our determination to build an energy future that is cleaner, more resilient and more prosperous for all Ghanaians.
"While we expand renewable energy deployment, we must also continue to strengthen the LPG value chain. Government recognizes the critical role played by the National Petroleum Authority, LPG Marketing Companies and other stakeholders in ensuring the availability, accessibility and safe use of LPG throughout the country. We will therefore continue to support the NPA and LPG Marketing Companies in their efforts to expand infrastructure, improve safety standards, increase public awareness and enhance consumer confidence in the use of LPG."
