The Ghana Medical Association, GMA has expressed concern over a query letter issued to the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, over the shutting down of the hospitals Accident and Emergency Centre.
Hospital management says the decision was necessitated by severe congestion at the facility, which had reached its capacity and could no longer safely admit additional emergency cases.
A development that has sparked widespread public debate, with concerns over access to emergency healthcare in one of the country's largest referral hospitals.
In a statement, the GMA while clarifying the situation says the query creates a negative impression and appears to suggest wrongdoing on the part of hospital management.
The Association says its assessment of the situation, including engagements with hospital management, staff of the Accident and Emergency Centre, and a review of explanations provided by the hospital's Medical Director, indicates that temporary measures introduced by management were aimed at redistributing patients to other health facilities within the Ashanti Region to ease pressure on the facility.
‘‘The GMA is however concerned about the negative picture portrayed by the query letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which appears to suggest wrongdoing by the management of KATH. The Association hopes that the outcome of the engagement between the Chief Executive Officer of KATH and the Honourable Minister for Health will contribute to strengthening emergency healthcare delivery and addressing the challenges highlighted by this incident rather than any adverse outcomes.’’
According to the GMA, patient numbers at the emergency centre had exceeded the hospital's designed capacity, creating an urgent need for operational interventions to protect patient safety and maintain quality care for critically ill patients already receiving treatment.
The Association further revealed that minutes from a meeting convened by the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate on June 2 outlined agreed actions to address the congestion challenge.
The GMA notes that the situation at the Accident and Emergency Centre has improved significantly and commended healthcare workers who worked under difficult conditions to ensure continuity of care.
While acknowledging that the immediate crisis has been resolved, the Association says the incident exposes broader challenges facing emergency healthcare delivery in the country.
It is therefore calling for increased investment in emergency medicine infrastructure, expansion of emergency care facilities, stronger referral systems, and improved resourcing of regional and district hospitals to enable them manage emergency cases closer to patients' communities.
The Ghana Medical Association says it will continue to monitor developments while supporting policies and interventions aimed at improving healthcare delivery and patient safety across the country.
