The NLT 9 auditorium at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) became a vibrant hub of inspiration on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as it played host to the transformative "Women in GIS" seminar. Organized by the Ghana Association of Student Planners (GASP-UCC) Office of the Women’s Commission, in collaboration with YouthMappers (UCC), the event successfully gathered a diverse audience of students and professionals to explore the theme: "Empowering Women To Explore Career Pathways and Opportunities in GIS."
The atmosphere was undeniably colorful, marked by a high energy that resonated throughout the hall and a professional execution that was evident in every detail. Under the capable hosting of Vida Efaah Akyirefi of the GASP Women’s Commission, the seminar proved to be a masterclass in professional empowerment. The distinguished lineup of speakers brought a wealth of practical and academic knowledge to the stage. Dr. (Mrs) Julia Quicoe, a lecturer from the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, provided a solid academic foundation for the discussions, while Ms. Eunice Bambukor, a Principal Disaster Management Officer at NADMO, shared critical insights into the real-world applications of Geographic Information Systems in national safety and disaster management.
The dialogue was further enriched by guest speakers Ms. Mary Prah Nyarko, Branch Service Manager at Pluto Wifi Company, Mr. Daniel O. Agyemang, Junior Assistant Registrar at CCTU, and Ms. Esther A. Benson of GRASAG WOCOM. Together, they offered a multi-faceted view of the industry, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional practice. The seminar was highly effective in its mission, providing direct mentorship on navigating the GIS job market and specifically highlighting the vital role women play in a traditionally male-dominated tech and planning sector.
The success of the event was a testament to the power of collaboration, showcasing how student-led initiatives like the partnership between GASP-UCC and YouthMappers can drive significant professional development.
Supported by the Randy Led Administration, the event ran seamlessly from its midday start to its successful conclusion. Participants left the NLT 9 auditorium not just with a deeper understanding of the GIS landscape, but with the renewed confidence and inspiration to pursue leadership roles and shape the future of the industry.
