The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commenced a two-day official visit to Latvia as part of Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to seek clarity and justice in the case of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who tragically died while studying at Riga Technical University

The minister’s visit follows growing public concern and calls for transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, which reportedly occurred under unclear conditions in the Latvian capital, Riga. The Government of Ghana has described the incident as deeply troubling and has emphasized the need for a thorough, transparent, and credible investigation

During his official engagements, Mr. Ablakwa is expected to meet with senior Latvian government officials, security agencies, university authorities, and members of the Ghanaian community in Latvia. Discussions will focus on obtaining detailed information about the events leading to the student’s death, assessing the progress of ongoing investigations, and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to secure accountability

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said Ghana will insist on full cooperation from all relevant Latvian authorities to ensure the case is handled with urgency and seriousness

“The Government of Ghana will continue to demand transparency and justice in accordance with international law and the protection of the rights of Ghanaian students abroad,” the statement read.

Mr. Ablakwa is also expected to meet the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia to convey the government’s deepest condolences and assure them of continued diplomatic support until the matter is fully resolved.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians abroad, Mr. Ablakwa said the state will not relent in pursuing justice for any Ghanaian citizen, regardless of where they reside.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that updates will be shared in due course as further details emerge from the visit and ongoing investigations.
