Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died at the age of 68 following a prolonged illness in Cairo, Egypt.
The Nkrumah family confirmed his death in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, saying he passed away peacefully while receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.
Gamal reportedly died on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. His death marks a significant loss to the Nkrumah family and the journalism community, where he built a distinguished career covering African and international affairs.
A Distinguished Career in Journalism
Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah was a respected journalist, writer and political commentator who spent a significant part of his professional life working with Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language publication of Egypt’s Al-Ahram media organisation.
Throughout his career, he examined political developments across Africa and the wider world, with particular attention to Pan-Africanism, international relations and Africa’s position in global affairs.
His work reflected a deep interest in the political, social and cultural forces shaping the continent, as well as the ideals of African unity and international solidarity associated with his father’s legacy.
Early Life and Education
Born in Accra in 1958, Gamal was the son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
He pursued higher education at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he obtained a doctorate in political science, according to biographical accounts.
His life and career also reflected the historical connections between Ghana and Egypt, particularly through his family’s longstanding ties to both countries.
Family Pays Tribute
In its statement, the Nkrumah family described Gamal as a man of profound intellectual curiosity, independent thought and quiet conviction.
The family said he upheld the ideals of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity while establishing his own identity and professional reputation.
It also expressed appreciation to the medical professionals and caregivers who supported him during his illness, as well as to the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their assistance.
The family has appealed for privacy as it mourns the loss, indicating that further details concerning memorial arrangements would be communicated in due course.
His Place in the Nkrumah Legacy
Gamal’s death brings renewed attention to the family of Ghana’s founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whose leadership was instrumental in Ghana attaining independence from British colonial rule in 1957.
His sister, Samia Nkrumah, is a Ghanaian politician who previously served as Member of Parliament for Jomoro and chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), founded by their father. His younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, is a writer and political activist.
Beyond his family name, Gamal established a professional legacy through his journalism, intellectual contributions and engagement with debates about Africa’s political future.
As tributes emerge following his passing, his life and work remain part of the wider story of Ghanaian journalism and the enduring influence of the Nkrumah family on African political thought.
May his soul rest in peace.
