Delay’s Viral Interview Sparks National Debate on Media Ethics

Popular Ghanaian television host Deloris Frimpong Manso, widely known as Delay, has come under heavy criticism after a segment from her show went viral showing her asking rising actress Ama Yeboah an intensely personal question  “Are you a virgin?”   while the young woman’s mother was seated beside her.

The moment, captured during a taping of The Delay Show, has triggered widespread backlash on social media, with many describing the question as invasive, inappropriate, and unnecessarily embarrassing.

Critics argue that the question crossed ethical boundaries, particularly given the guest’s young age and the presence of her parent. The video clip has since sparked conversations around media professionalism, respect for privacy, and the boundaries of celebrity interviews in Ghana’s entertainment industry.

One of the many voices condemning the exchange is Burna The Blogger, a prominent social media commentator, who described Delay’s question as “very unnecessary and completely out of line.”

“That question should never have been asked — especially not with her mother right there,” Burna The Blogger stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “It was humiliating, embarrassing, and offered no value to the conversation. We need to start respecting people’s privacy, even in showbiz.”

Several other commentators have echoed similar sentiments, saying that while Delay is known for her bold and often confrontational interview style, there must be a balance between getting headlines and upholding human dignity.

Media analysts have also weighed in, urging talk show hosts to exercise greater sensitivity, especially when dealing with young or emerging public figures who may not yet be accustomed to the pressures of high-profile media exposure.

Despite the controversy, neither Delay nor Ama Yeboah has issued an official response as of now. However, the debate continues to dominate social media discussions, with many users calling for greater accountability and professionalism from Ghanaian media personalities.

The incident, observers say, serves as a reminder that the pursuit of viral content should never come at the expense of basic decency and respect for guests’ personal boundaries.
