Cylinder Manufacturing Company: About 30% of LPG cylinders unsafe; nationwide rollout of Cylinder Recirculation Model is needed

The Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) has raised alarm over the safety of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in circulation, revealing that nearly 30 percent of cylinders submitted for refurbishment are unfit for continued use.
According to the company, inspections carried out under the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) show that nearly 30% of cylinders are defective, posing serious risks to households across the country.
Management warned that the use of such faulty cylinders increases the likelihood of gas leaks, fires and explosions, incidents that have previously resulted in loss of lives and property in several communities.
Speaking to journalists, Managing Director Abdul-Rahman Mankir stressed the urgent need to expand the implementation of the CRM beyond its current operational zones.
He explained that while the model is already being implemented in major urban centres such as Accra, Kumasi, and Tema, extending it nationwide would significantly enhance public safety.
Mr. Mankir also indicated that the company plans to partner with the National Petroleum Authority to intensify public education on the initiative, noting that awareness remains low even in some urban areas.
“Currently, it is being run in Accra, Kumasi, and Tema. And so if it is expanded to other regions, I mean it is going to help a lot, especially in terms of keeping our cylinders safe. Very soon, we are going to partner with the NPA to do full-scale public education on the cylinder recirculation model.
“But one thing we have realised is that in some parts, even in Accra, some people don’t even know about the CRM and so when we do the full-scale public education, we are sure people are going to come on board," he stated.
The CRM is designed to ensure that LPG cylinders are regularly inspected, maintained, and replaced when necessary. Under the system, consumers exchange empty cylinders for filled and certified ones at designated outlets, rather than refilling their own cylinders at fuel stations.
The GCMC believes that full nationwide adoption of the model will help reduce the prevalence of unsafe cylinders and improve overall safety standards in the use of LPG.
