CCMA Cautions Drivers Against Unauthorized Increase in Transport Fares

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) has cautioned commercial drivers against the unauthorized increase in transport fares, urging all drivers within the metropolis to strictly adhere to the officially approved fares.

The caution comes amid concerns over passengers being charged fares above the approved rates on some transport routes. The Assembly says such practices are unacceptable and has called on drivers to respect the established fare structure to protect the travelling public from undue financial pressure.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Patrick Yeboah Hayford, drivers were reminded of their responsibility to operate within the approved transport fare regime.

The Assembly emphasized that transport fares are determined through the appropriate processes and that individual drivers do not have the authority to arbitrarily increase charges based on personal decisions.

The CCMA further appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report instances where drivers demand fares beyond the approved rates. Passengers who encounter such violations are encouraged to report them to the appropriate authorities for the necessary action to be taken.

The move is aimed at ensuring fairness and accountability within the city's public transport system while protecting passengers from what could become an unnecessary burden on their daily transportation expenses.

For many residents of Cape Coast, commercial transport remains an essential part of their daily lives, with workers, students, traders and other commuters depending heavily on taxis and commercial vehicles to move around the metropolis. Any unauthorized increase in fares can therefore have a direct impact on household expenses and the cost of doing business.

The Assembly's warning also serves as a reminder to both drivers and passengers that maintaining a fair and orderly transport system requires cooperation from all stakeholders. While drivers are expected to comply with approved fares, passengers also have a role to play by speaking up and reporting violations rather than silently accepting unauthorized charges.
