A 70-year-old visually impaired man, Kwasi Nkansah, has died following a fire outbreak at Sefwi Adjoafua in the Bia West District on Saturday, February 14.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the fire destroyed a two-bedroom house with a kitchen and damaged several household items.
In a statement, the Service said firefighters from the Debiso Fire Station responded promptly after receiving a distress call at 2:00 am. Fire crews arrived at the scene at 2:30 am under what the Service described as “challenging conditions” caused by heavy rainfall, poor visibility and bad road networks.
Despite the difficulties, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control at 14:36 hours and fully extinguished it at 15:03 hours, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
“The fire destroyed a two-bedroom, one-kitchen residence, claiming the life of 70-year-old visually impaired Kwasi Nkansah and damaging several household items,” the statement said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The Service expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and the community.
“The Ghana National Fire Service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and sympathises with the Sefwi Adjoafua community during this difficult time,” the statement noted.
It also advised the public to take preventive measures to avoid similar incidents.
“The Service urges families and caregivers to ensure the safety of the vulnerable, practise fire safety, maintain clear escape routes, install smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and report emergencies promptly,” the statement added.
