President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a modern 24-hour economy model market at Asesewa, marking a significant step toward restoring the town’s historic status as a commercial hub.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama recalled Asesewa’s long-standing reputation as a vibrant trading centre, but noted that years of inadequate infrastructure had contributed to its decline.
“Historically, Asesewa has been a market town for many years but over time, the infrastructure has not kept pace, affecting its growth,” he stated. The new market is part of a nationwide initiative to develop 261 modern district-level markets aimed at boosting commerce, expanding local economies, and creating jobs across the country.
The 24-hour economy model market is expected to transform trading in Asesewa by providing improved facilities, enhanced security, and extended operating hours. The project is also anticipated to attract more traders and investors, helping to stimulate economic activity in the town and its surrounding communities.
Residents and local stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the development will restore Asesewa’s prominence as a key trading centre in the Eastern Region. The sod-cutting ceremony forms part of the President’s broader agenda to drive economic growth and infrastructure development across Ghana.
