The Elmina Traditional Council, led by Paramount Chief Nana Kodwo Conduah VI, has officially announced the commencement of the annual ban on the lagoon beginning June 1, 2026, as part of customary rites leading to the celebration of the revered Bakatue Festival.
According to the Traditional Council, the six-week ban signifies a sacred period of silence, purification, and spiritual observance within the community. During this period, all fishing activities on the lagoon are strictly suspended. The directive also prohibits noise-making activities including drumming, singing, funeral celebrations, and other forms of public festivities throughout the duration of the ban.
In addition, the Council stated that fresh crops and fish are not expected to be sold in marketplaces during the sacred period, explaining that the observance allows the deities and divinities of the land to undergo fasting and purification rituals aimed at protecting the community from calamities, sickness, and bad omens.
The Traditional Council emphasized that the annual observance forms an important part of the cultural heritage of the people of Elmina and serves as a period of reflection and spiritual preparation for the community.
According to the statement, rituals and preparations carried out during the six weeks are intended to ensure a successful fishing season, abundant harvest, peace, and good health for residents in the coming year. Residents and visitors have therefore been urged to respect the customs and traditions associated with the ban to help maintain peace and uphold the values of the community.
The Bakatue Festival remains one of the most celebrated traditional festivals in the Central Region, attracting both local and international visitors to Elmina every year.
