Cape Coast is widely known as the Cradle of Formal Education in Ghana, a title earned through its historic role in shaping the country’s academic foundation. The city was among the first places in the then Gold Coast where Western-style education was introduced by European missionaries in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Some of Ghana’s oldest and most prestigious secondary schools were established, including Mfantsipim School, Wesley Girls’ High School, Adisadel College, St. Augustine’s College, Ghana National and may others. These institutions have produced many of Ghana’s leaders, professionals, and influential figures over the decades.

Cape Coast is also home to the renowned University of Cape Coast, one of Ghana’s leading universities, particularly respected for the development of teacher education, research, and academic excellence. Because of these institutions, the city has long attracted students from across Ghana and beyond, making education a central part of its culture and identity.

For generations, Cape Coast has been a city where knowledge, discipline, and leadership are nurtured. This strong academic tradition is the reason why many proudly refer to the historic city of Oguaa as the heartbeat of education in Ghana.

As we celebrate Ghana Month on TW Radio, we celebrate, Cape Coast that have shaped the intellectual and cultural foundation of our nation.
