Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has made a strong case for the inclusion of Andre Ayew in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that the veteran forward still has a key role to play.
Ayew’s possible return to the Black Stars has sparked debate, with sections of supporters calling for a shift towards younger players, while others point to his leadership and experience as assets Ghana cannot afford to ignore. The former captain has been out of the national setup for over a year but recently returned to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, joining NAC Breda and quickly settling into life in the Eredivisie.
Under former coach Otto Addo, Ayew was overlooked on several occasions, but the change in technical direction has revived his chances of a recall ahead of the tournament. Ankrah believes the 36-year-old’s presence could be decisive for Ghana in a demanding group.
"If Andre Dede Ayew is fit, he should be included in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup because he is Ghana’s most experienced player," he said. Ghana will come up against England, Croatia and Panama in the group stage, with the team set to open their campaign on June 17 in Toronto as preparations intensify for the tournament.
