The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has celebrated academic excellence at the 6th Prof. David Darko Obiri Dean’s Award ceremony organised by its School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SOPPS), where 28 students were honoured for outstanding performance in the 2024/2025 academic year.

The event, themed “Excellence with Impact: Turning Academic Brilliance into Leadership, Innovation, and Service,” brought together faculty, students, and invited guests to recognise exceptional academic achievement and encourage a culture of dedication and innovation within the School.

The Dean’s Awards, held annually, celebrate students who have distinguished themselves in various categories, including Best-Performing Male and Female Student, Most Improved Student, and Overall Best Student. Awardees received cash prizes, plaques, and certificates in recognition of their hard work and commitment to excellence.

In his address, the Dean of the School, Ernest Obese, congratulated the award recipients and commended them for their resilience and determination. He noted that their achievements serve as a source of inspiration to their colleagues and encouraged all students to remain focused and committed to their academic goals with the hope of being recognised in future ceremonies.

Delivering the keynote address, the immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Rosemond Boohene, applauded the students for their impressive strides in their academic journey. She emphasised the critical role of pharmacy in ensuring quality healthcare delivery and improving health outcomes. Prof. Boohene urged the student-pharmacists to uphold the highest professional and ethical standards, reminding them of the responsibility they will carry in safeguarding the lives of patients.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Mr. George Dutu Jnr, who was adjudged the Overall Best Student for Level 400, expressed appreciation to the Dean and School Management for creating an enabling learning environment. He also acknowledged the role of peers in fostering healthy academic competition and mutual support.

Ms. Panyin Benfoah Donkor, named the Most Improved Student in Level 400, encouraged her colleagues to make productive use of their time on campus and remain consistent in their academic efforts.

The ceremony reaffirmed UCC’s commitment to nurturing excellence, leadership, and service, as it continues to train highly skilled pharmacists equipped to make meaningful contributions to Ghana’s healthcare system and beyond.
